* Form of the passive : (be) + V3
* In the passive, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb.
* Only transitive verbs (verbs that are followed by an object) are used in the passive. It is not possible to use verbs such as happens, sleep, come, and seem (intransitive verbs) in the passive.
1. Simple Present
Pattern : S + am/is/are + V3
Example :
Active : My sister makes a cake.
The passive voice is : A cake is made by my sister.
2. Simple Past
Pattern : S + was/were + V3
Example :
Active : The dentist fixed my teeth.
The passive voice is : My teeth were fixed by the dentist.
3. Simple Future
a. Will
Pattern : S + will + be + V3
Example :
Active : Sue will tear the letter.
The passive voice is : The letter will be torn by Sue
b. Be going to
Pattern : S + am/is/are going to + be + V3
Example :
Active : Marco is going to read magazines.
The passive voice is : Magazines are going to be read by Marco.
4. Present Perfect
Pattern : S + has/have + been + V3
Example :
Active : My teacher has taught English for 7 years.
The passive voice is : English has been taught for 7 years by my teacher.
5. Present Continuous
Pattern : S + am/is/are + being + V3
Example :
Active : I am proposing my girlfriend.
The passive voice is : My girlfriend is being proposed by me.
6. Modal Verbs (will, would, can, could, may, might, must, should, has to, have to, had to)
Pattern : S + modal + be + V3
Example :
Active : She can play piano very well.
The passive voice is : Piano can be played very well by her.
